It’s official: the bob is THE haircut of the season. We’ve watched Zoe Ball take hers up a notch and we’ve admired Pamela Anderson’s Marilyn Monroe-esque iteration, too, but now Julianne Moore has entered the picture – and her version is the sharpest and most stylish we’ve seen so far.
Last night, Julianne gave her latest hair transformation a red carpet debut at the world premiere of her new dark comedy series Sirens. She stepped out on the carpet looking as gorgeous as ever – but if one thing caught our eye, it was her precision laser-cut bob.

While we had an inkling that she had gone for a chop after she sported a short, sleek pony at Cannes, it was a welcome surprise to see her wear it down and glammed up.

She looked as if she had just stepped out of the salon chair with a razor-sharp bob, styled to sleek perfection. Her glossy, straightened locks delicately grazed her collarbones, with the ends subtly bevelled inwards to create a gorgeous face-framing effect.
We assume Julianne’s latest look is the work of her go-to hairdresser Owen Gould, who created her sleek ponytail earlier in the week. While he’s not shared any information on Julianne’s laser cut bob, it’s a style that comes as no surprise to leading trend-watcher Tom Smith.
Tom, who’s been dubbed as ‘The Hairvoyant’ for his remarkably accurate hair trend forecasting, actually flagged this cut as one to watch back in winter, and Julianne has certainly elevated it even further for spring.
As Tom explains: ‘The laser cut bob is a perfectly measured, sharp and precise, one-length bob that sits between the very top of the shoulder and the corner of the jaw. It works best with a middle parting and can be combined with a fringe if desired.’
For those who’ve been left debating a salon visit after the rise in red-carpet bobs, luckily, it’s an easy choice, as this haircut is a universally flattering style: ‘The length can be adjusted to suit many face shapes, but for a softer result, go for chin length or longer, or for a bolder alternative go above the chin,’ advises Tom.
If you have finer hair, this haircut may actually be the answer to your prayers: ‘It’s a great option for those with fine hair as the cut will increase the appearance of thickness and density in the hair. It’s also very easy to achieve for those with naturally flat or fine hair.’
HOW TO STYLE A LASER CUT BOB
As we all know, red carpet-worthy hair doesn’t maintain itself. While short hair is generally considered to be lower maintenance, styling is the key to a polished look.
If you’re not sure where to start, Tom advises: ‘To blow-dry this shape into place, you’ll need to use products that keep the hair smoother, such as heat protecting, anti-frizz creams or serums. Follow it up with a straightening iron on a low temperature to seal the style in.’
