Basically 9/11 Je T’Aime

I think I found a new annual tradition, a film to watch around this time each year. And I certainly don't mean to trivialize such a terrible event as occurred on September 11th, 2001, but man I need something to temper the endless barrage of "Never Forget" memes that clutter up my Facebook newsfeed on the days leading up to and including that fateful anniversary. It would do some people in my country good to realize that America is not the world, but naturally in my experience any attempt at fostering an intelligent discussion on the matter is immediately met with claims of anti-Americanism, as if exceptionalism is the baseline.
11'09''01 could have easily been a disaster, a hodgepodge of…

Various world directors: Short films tangentially related to the events of September 11th. Some solid, most respectful, many solipsistic.
Shohei Imamura: I AM A MOTHERFUCKING SNAKE.

“Bin Laden, come back, please. We all need you here.”
Only good segment in this is Ken Loach's because he uses the letter-of-the-law loophole of "make a short film about 9/11" to talk about the Chilean coup on 9/11/73 and how much Henry Kissinger fucking sucks
Iñárritu’s segment is genuinely evil and Sean Penn’s includes what I can only describe as “magical realism 9/11” - this whole project is so fucking weird man

worth seeing just for alejándro g iñárritu’s short which just completely destroyed me emotionally, and it’s like the second film he ever made which is RIDICULOUS

Of the 11 shorts, the one by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's is the most powerful, followed by Ken Loach and Mira Nair.

Review by Andrew Miller ★★★½
Ken Loach often gets dismissed as a self righteous little shit, I guess justifiably, based on his often sanctimonious peans to the working man, but lurking underneath that bleeding heart is the soul of a shit-stirrer, never more evident in his contribution for this.
Here he uses his allotted time on the tragedy of 9/11 to make sure we never forget the other tragic 9/11s that paved the way for that fateful day when some sick fuck vigilantes felt they had to “overreact” (as the President Bartletts are so eager to do, or the Josh Brolins in Sicarioare fully authorized to do). An act of terror, no doubt,to show our “indispensable nation” that others were feeling pretty fucking dispensable.
Loach…

11'09"01 September 11 is incredibly ambitious, an attempt to find an artistic way to deal with the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The film was released in many countries of the world exactly one year after the attacks, and consists of eleven short films dealing with the events in one way or another, each eleven minutes, nine seconds, and one image long, and made by directors from the entire world.
The film has somehow vanished into obscurity, and indeed, I haven't watched it myself since seeing it in the cinema twenty years ago, but I still remember being very impressed with it, overwhelmed even, because the diversity of approaches made a huge impact on me, even if some…

Tres Amigos: Alejandro González Iñárritu Ranked
For the purposes of this run, I only went with Iñárritu's segment, a mostly blank but full of agony from the day that America (and unfortunately the world) changed from its very core, showing of how much Iñárritu can bring with only audio and a couple of fragments of what happened in NY, even if it shows a bit manipulative. Overall, a bleak but honest attempt of bringing out the anger of being present or being a witness of 9/11.

Review by Dan O'Neill ★★★
As is always the case with these anthology films, some are good, some are bad, and some are just plain weird (looking at you, last one).
Also, why out of all the American directors to choose from, did it have to be Sean Penn?

Powerful.
"I like to tell you. We have something in common. Your loved ones were murdered, mine were to. And we share a date. September the 11th. Tuesday September the 11th."
We definitely don't talk enough about the US involvement in the assassination of Salvador Allende.A desalambrar
